Why Other People Have More than You

Are all people created equal?

image from www.hedgeco.net I often ask myself why people do the things they do.  I see people making their lives miserable when they could be taking steps to minimize their efforts and maximize their producitivity.  Why do otherwise smart people do seemingly dumb things?  Alternatively, why do some people know exactly what to say to close the sale.  How did they know the right time to start that new business or to create that new product.  I am reminded of that quote from Peter Drucker, one of the greatest business minds of the past 50 years.  He said that when sane, rational and moral people behave in ways that seem inexplicable, its because they see a reality different from ours.

What color is the sun on the planet you are living on?

What does your reality look like?  I have know people who work hard every single day and don't achieve the same level of success that other people achieve with have of the effort.  Do you know someone whose life just seems easier than yours?  It just isn't fair.  Is it?  Steven Covey talks about paradigms in his book, "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People".  Paradigms are essentially how we view the world.  It is the set of glasses we use to frame what we experience.  A paradigm is our perception of reality.  It is our interpretation of events based on our life experiences.  Your life and how you see it is your reality... your paradigm.  He also related that how you see the world influences what you do.  What you do influences what you have, and what you have or the experiences have had influence how you see the world.  The only thing you can change in that cycle is how you see the world.  What you have is a direct result of how you see the world.

We have not because we ask not

This is not an article to talk about how to get rich quick.  This is a discussion about how to achieve more meaningful results with the limited time we each have here on this planet.  If you want more, you have to change the way you think.  The thinking that got you where you are is not good enough to get you where you need to go.  You should check out that book "What Got You Here Wont Get you There."  Its an excellent book by Marshal Goldsmith on how successful people get even more successful.  I will be writing a few more posts that describe some of the areas in which we can change how we think to help improve our chances of success in our personal and professional lives.

Some final thoughts

Why do some people seem to catch all of the breaks while you struggle to make ends meet?  Its simple: They do things different.  The do things different because they see the world differently.  William Arthur Ward said...

“If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it.”

Think about the people who have achieved great things and you will find that he really knew what he was talking about.
Do you think you deserve more in personal and professional life?  Do you think you have achieved more than you deserve?  Do you wonder why you are struggling to pay your bills while other people seem to live in abundance?  Do you think success is defined by how much you make.  I would love to hear from you and what you think defines a successful life.
